FIRE UPDATE BLOG

Fire Update Blog

This blog has been created so that the Rim High School community can communicate with each other during this difficult time. It's intent is to let staff and community to be able to communicate with each other while we are displaced from our mountain home.

Please note that each party is responsible for their own blog entries. Please remember to keep this blog family friendly in all communications....

Students have been calling me and asking what we are doing about the SAT's that are planned at Rim High School for Saturday, November 3rd. Can we find out what we are going to do and decided how we get that information out to students?

JimV said...

Has someone contacted the SAT testing services? That would be were I would start. Who was in charge of the SAT testing? If you get a hold of the Rim Coordinator, then they could get a hold of the Testing Services. The students might be able to take the test with a school close to where they are located......

Hi Stephanie, Are you still up in the mountains? How is our neighborhood? Stay safe. Liz Alesafar

Liann, I will pray for you that your new house is still on Poplar street. I would check for you, but I am down in San Diego with the other fires. Stay safe! Liz Alesafar

Hi Jim, Tricia is the SAT coordinator. She is down in Brea (I think) I will contact her and ask her to post a blog on this site. Liz Alesafar

I have emailed ETS about the SAT. They will be sending the testing material to another school and as soon as I find out where, I will post here.

Liann, 2018 Poplar is one that they say burned on Poplar. Rimoftheworld.net incidents is where that was posted. Tricia, thank you for the info on the SAT's.Once we find out more about the location I will call the students who I have cell phone numbers for and let then know and they can call those they know who were signed up for it.
I am still in my home in Lake Arrowhead. We still have power, cable and the Internet. I live on Grenoble off North Bay, everything looks good here. I was in Jensen's market this morning and talked with Dick Parmaalee regarding the fire update. The slide fire, which we were watching from the dam/marina area in Lake Arrowhead has eased up on the Lake Arrowhead side. Yesterday (Tues) the flames were intense, today no flames that we could see. If I get any information from up here I will post it.

I am around in Palm Springs. I have been keeping a blog elsewhere-- www.urbzonline.com

I have posted some other resources besides rotw.net.

I know already of a few staff members' homes that are gone. If I can hello, please let me know.

I wish the best for everyone. --Joe Urbz

Hey Jim V...(Vaughan?) Do Cath & Dennis still live on Secret? Is their house OK?
Laurie

BTW...Guy and Jean Bonanno are OK, don't know about the house yet. Any news on Pete and Kathleen's house? We have some girls clothes if the kids are in need.

Blessings to all in the Rim family! Pat and I are in Mission Viejo with Pat's sister. Our prayers go out to all who have been so adversely affected by this devastating fire!
If anyone need to contact us we're at (949) 581-9005. I check my e-mail daily (garytompkins@mac.com). Cell phone is (909) 273-7197. So far our home is OK,but so many of yours must not have. We all need to pull together to ease the collective and individual pain. Any word on Mike Ross? John Arner? Andrea Ingham? Glen Mitchell? Connie Rigney? Their homes must have been directly threatened.

Hello again,

www.fireupdate.com has an unofficial burn list to look at. Also, the chat rooms via www.rimoftheworld.net have people in the rooms that also have unofficial lists of burned structures for each area.

Stay safe everyone.

I guess we were the only ones who Stayed. John did not feel that the threat to Rim Forest was great so we opted to stay, so did Lisa.

We were able to drive around the Golf Course area yesterday. Unfortunately,my sister in law and brother in law lost their home on Del Norte.

Who'd have thought that we would see this kind of thing again in our life time!!!

If I can do anything from up here for any of you please let me know.

It is so good to know that we have a way to keep in touch with our RHS family! As Barbara Lane said, Harry, Casey and I are still here at home in Crest Park! We are safe and free of fire in our area. I'm truly worried about the homes of our Running Springs staffers. Please keep updating as you find new information. If anyone needs anything feel free to contact me at (909) 337-4370. Stay save!
My best wishes go out to all,

So sorry to hear of those who have lost their homes and I know we all can't wait to get back home and to work to console and interact together again.

I would like to start a list of those we know did lose their homes, both staff and students, so I can start a list (that I hope is not long) to assist in any way we can.

Hope to see all of you very soon.

My daughter (Tiffany) talked with Michelle Scullin and Michelle told her it was her parents house on Poplar that burned and the one next to them. She said their house was half burned and the rest of it was collapsing.

Julie Wood, God bless her, found out that my house was still standing and called me a little while ago. The Scullin's house is across the street from mine. I'm very grateful and also heartbroken for those in our Rim family and community with big losses. I would not have found out about my house if it weren't for this blog and those of you who cared to connect me and pass on the address. So thank you.

Unknown said...

Liann, thanks for the update. Is Julie Wood's place OK? Glad to hear your place is safe....so many have lost so much. Hope to see everyone back at work soon.

BTW, I've rescheduled the BodyWorlds field trip for Nov. 6 and if we're still out of school the kids that want to go can just meet me there. If anyone wants to join us, just send me a note.

Yes, as of now Julie's house is just fine. The fire came extremely close on all sides and was very touch and go for awhile, but survived. It stinks like heck but it is still there. I am sorry for the damage that has been done to the mountain and everyones lives. Everyone is in my thoughts.

Laurie, I talked to Cath yesterday and everything is fine, even though her house was broken into, but that means that it is still there. They are not sure about Dennis' office, but the house is OK. I am sorry to hear about the losses that everyone has endured, but I am glad to hear from everyone and the positive posts that have been entered. I hope that this message finds you all well and you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep adding to this post, it is great to hear from you and this goes out to John and the rest of you Friday afternoon basketball players, I am still out there practicing and you better watch out when we get back! Plus, John I have a cold one waiting for you at the Faulkener! I hope to see all of you soon.......

There were several homes that burned on our street, but it seems that ours, and Daryl Wear's, are OK (touch wood). Our hearts and prayers are with our friends, colleagues, and neighbors who have lost their houses.
"The Diary of Anne Frank" was supposed to open last night; I have spoken with most of the students involved and they are all safe, but disappointed that we could not perform. Hopefully, we will all be back soon, and will be able to get things going again.
Take care and stay safe,

I spoke with ETS and they will still be sending the testing materials to the school. If they get there, I am shipping myself there via UPS! The test will be postponed and given 2 weeks later. I am in Brea with the girls and trying to keep them busy. I drive them everywhere so they can see their friends. I know my house is safe as well as Guy's, Andrea's and the Ferrara's. I have been in contact with everyone from the counseling office including Dave. He has had many, many offers of help. His insurance co is being very helpful also. If you need to reach me, email at work or (909) 286-7574. Can't wait to see you all soon!

I just spoke with Sue Barcus and although homes around hers were lost, search and rescue friends tell her that her house on Circle View Way is still standing. From our vantage point in Rim Forest, things are much more calm today, although the smoke layer down in the valley looks thick.

Tricia, I am not sure if there is anything I can do, but If you need help getting materials secure for the SAT, I am up here and am happy to help where ever there is need.

My thoughts and prayers are with all who are dealing with their loss. May God bless and keep you all.

If there is anything we can do please feel free to call... 909-336-3623.

Hi Everyone,
This seems like a great way for everyone to communicate, and I enjoyed reading everyone's comments. I wanted everyone to know that the Grass Valley fire hit the area where I am renting pretty hard. As far as I know from Bill Kelly, my street was spared, although the streets above and below mine were decimated and look like a warzone. I have been staying at my mom's house in Orange, and life has been tough without clothes (I have had to do some shopping!), as I didn't have a chance to go by my house after leaving school at 1:00 on Monday to grab anything. I understand that the side of my house was scorched from the heat, and that some windows were blown out so I hope that it is not suffering from severe smoke damage, but I don't know when we are going be let back in. I look forward to seeing everyone again and "rebuilding" together. This is a strong staff, and we have the life and spirit to put this community back together. Material items can always be replaced, but my heart goes out to those who lost anything in the fire.

It's hard to believe that four years have passed and we are having to cope with another tragic fire. My heartfelt condolences to those of you who have lost your homes.

Brit and I are staying in Ontario at the Residence Inn. We've met a young LAE family here who lost their home. My daughter, Amy, and I had fun shopping for toys for their two young boys.

Our son, Chris, has been fighting the fires in Castaic. He was able to get up the hill to check on his in-laws house (the Brandts) in Green Valley Lake. Fortunately, their house survived! Our home in the Grass Valley area was about a quarter of a mile away from the flames ~ too close for comfort but it's okay.

I'm looking forward to getting back on the mountain to begin the healing process. Brit and I are available to help in any way we can.

If anyone from transportation is logging on here's a question. Our field Trip from Rim High which was scheduled for Tuesday, October 30 is obviously canceled. I spoke to the people from the exhibit and tentatively rescheduled it for November 6th. The exhibit is leaving California soon and that was the only time that was open. Is there any way I can find out if a bus is available for that date? Wayne was scheduled to take us. I'd sure hate for the kids to miss this great opportunity. I am assuming that we'll be back to school by Monday, November 5th.

Is school going to start next week? I'm just going to be able to get home Thursday, possibly later. They said we'd know when we were starting on Thursday I believe anyways.
It just seemed like the website was more concerned about the fact that Lake Arrowhead is all back, and that they forget about GVL and Running Springs and Smiley Park; places where students lost a lot of homes too.
Thank you! Hope everyones okay.

Hey All. Logan Brumm here. It is so hard to read this blog and hear of the loss that we are all experiencing. My house is fine (as I am finally home!).

I am the president of NHS this year, and we are going to try and do a benefit dinner on November 17th. Our last benefit was raised over a grand, so hopefully we can get the word out into the mountain and get some support.

Does this date conflict with any other events anyone knows of? (as of this point...) It is on a Saturday.

Again, my heart goes out to everyone affected by this disaster.

Mr. Ross - i'm so sorry for your loss. Please know you and your wife are in my families prayers.

As such is everyone else.

God Bless.

Hey everyone- this is Tina Plotner and Hayley Sacks.
We have a couple questions about what's going on with school. My friend called us from the mountain (We're currently in New York) and told us that school isn't resuming until Nov. 13 because the schools have to be cleaned, and the Rim website said the same. We were wondering about what's going to happen to the AP classes... since we're on such a limited schedule, is there any way we can do work during this time? Is there anything really important that we need to cover? Mr. Tompkins has a website, but our other teachers don't so we decided to use this blog to talk to our teachers. Please let us know... and for everyone who has suffered any losses, let us know what we can do to help.

-Tina (and Hayley)

P.S. What's going on with the AP Bio/Anatomy field trip to the Bodies exhibit?

J said...

Anybody know what's going to happen with the SAT's. Thank you!

Unknown said...

Tina & Haley,

At the moment I have rescheduled the Bodies Trip for Nov. 6th as a volunteer field trip. If 15 people shoe up we still get the discount. I will pay the admission with my credit card and if you have already paid ASB I'll get refunded. If you haven't paid ASB yet you'll need to give me the $15 to cover my credit card charges. IF WE DO THIS IT IS NOT AN OFFICIAL SCHOOL ACTIVITY ....however, The exhibit is scheduled to leave San Diego after Nov. 6th BUT they are considering extending their stay. IF THEY STAY LONGER I'll get a date sometime after Nov. 13th so we can do the trip as planned. The man in charge is supposed to call me tomorrow and I'll post info as soon as I get an update. It's great to be back on the mountain, and surreal. Just wanted to let you all know if you are insured with Farmers that I got a check TODAY for loss of use...just had to show my receipts and they issued the check right then. It took 30 minutes. They have a big mobile unit outside of The Bus Stop and Blauer's on Highway 18 in R.Springs. They said they would be here for another week.

And if you are in AP World...check the class website for a super, DUPER fun DBQ to do :)and a head start on your next project. (If you can't do it because of your circumstances, no worries. But, see, I know lots of you are like Tina and Hayley..."give me work, give me work"). I'm looking forward to seeing all of you back at school soon.

Thanks, Laurie Schonert

Very cool, I'll try and let other AP Bio/Anatomy students know about the Bodies trip and see if there are any days that would be especially convenient. Hopefully it won't interfere with any of the sports matches either (but even if it does, I would definitely miss a tennis match to go).
